Meet the Horses!
Wild souls unite with purpose
Adopted, rescued or rehomed
Mel’s dearly loved family members and companions, all eight horses are either adopted, rescued or rehomed.
Each horse is supported through our proprietary training and socialisation program, which is vastly more about the human than it is about the horse! See below for more.
Our horses do not live in stables but roam large paddocks with their friends at Mel’s 80-acre sanctuary in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, South Australia.
Mel’s Approach to ‘Training’
Acknowledgement of each individual horse’s emotions in the moment – and respect for their right as a sentient being to make their own choices – underpins Mel’s program, The Sublime Way.
Distinct from a training course that can be purchased, studied and certified, the horses were ultimately the ones to teach Mel a mutually respectful way of being in relationship. The Sublime Way evolved organically from Mel’s lived experience with her horses, guided by private tuition she sought out from like-hearted professional horse trainers.
Founded in trust, whispered communication, and grace. From horse to human, and human to horse.
In 2025, Mel began mentoring like-minded guests working with one of her horses in The Sublime Way, creating a doorway to a deeper understanding of themselves and what true partnership feels like.
A powerful, proven, one-on-one mentoring program emerged, and 2026 saw the opportunity extended to like-minded horse owners seeking a new, emotionally enriching way of working with their own horse. For availability and pricing, enquire with Mel via the CONTACT page.
Horse Riding
Four of our eight horses are occasionally ridden on the trail privately, something Mel treasures as a privilege.
However the Walk Sublime horses are not offered to the public for riding in any capacity.
It’s just not what we’re about.
Koszi
Australian Brumby
Born 2016 | Adopted from NSW 2019 | 13.3 hh | 380 kg
Burnt buckskin gelding
Mel’s ‘Man From Snowy River’ mini-mountain horse, Koszi (“Cosi”) was adopted from the wonderful team at Save The Brumbies in NSW as a two year old. The founding member of our Brumby Trio, this is his forever home.
We hold our heads high walking with Koszi in public as he’s a classic example of the Australian Heritage Brumby’s loving nature, loyalty and courage.
This little Brumby is proof of his breed’s ability to adapt with confidence thanks to their inherent temperament.
Koszi and his brethren are a living part of our country’s history and all Australians’ heritage. Mel firmly believes a better plan can be put to our government for management of numbers, replacing current cruel waste.
Saxon
Andalusian X Warmblood
Born 2016 | Rehomed from NSW 2019 | 15.0 hh | 520 kg
Mahogany bay gelding
Now here’s a young man with presence! Unbelievably, Saxon was abandoned as a foal, rescued and raised by a loving lady and her young daughter in NSW before finding his forever home with Mel, courtesy of Gumtree classifieds.
The love and care he received in his early days reflects in his trusting, kind and inquisitive nature today.
He is a particularly sensitive soul and wears his heart on his sleeve. However, he’s also one of the most strong-willed beings Mel has ever encountered!
A horse with an iron will, Saxon often has something enlightening to teach guests he’s intuitively matched with. Always in the most gentle and non-judgemental of ways.
Kite
Arabian
Born 2015 | Rehomed from VIC 2019 | 14.2 hh | 460 kg
Black/brown mare
As good fortune would have it, Kite didn’t grow tall enough for high level endurance riding competition. She was offered for sale as a purebred three year old and after travelling to VIC to meet her, and the family who lovingly raised her, Mel trusted her gut and Kite’s future was sealed.
In the same way a restaurant is known for their signature dish, Kite was to become Walk Sublime’s signature horse. Sensible and self-assured; considerate of others. A temperament as cool as a cucumber. And innate beauty that shines from within.
Reliably showing calm regard for new situations and confidence in herself, Kite embodies what Walk Sublime is all about. Akin to the matriarch of our family, this is her forever home.
Torquay
Thoroughbred ex racehorse
‘He Is Golden’
Born 2012 | Rehomed in SA 2020 | 16.2hh | 615 kg
Bay gelding
Hard to believe this supremely gentle giant charged around South Australian racetracks until he was 8 years old.
Torquay ran his last race in Jun 2020 retiring unsound – defined as ‘an abnormal deviation in the structure of a horse, rendering it partially or completely useless’. While sadly a far too common outcome for racehorses, Mel had other ideas.
His body may have been unfit for riding but his mind was sound. It was clear this horse was an old soul and had much to give to us humans. Upon coming to the place he’d call home for the rest of his life, he was not to be confined to endless days in a paddock.
With time and calm, well-guided effort, mutual trust was earned and Torquay started to venture out into the world. The public’s reaction to his presence, drawn to him both young and old, was such that a Racing SA mascot rug was custom made for him.
Torquay proudly walked in his mascot rug with a crowd of 3,000 at Hutt St Centre’s 2025 ‘Walk A Mile In My Boots’ fundraising event, raising $1,700 in support of Adelaide’s homeless.
Quattro
Thoroughbred ex racehorse
‘Babe In Boots’
Born 2013 | Rehomed from NT 2021 | 15.1 hh | 500 kg
Chestnut mare
Quattro ran her last race in Aug 2021, joining Mel and her forever family soon after. This mare was fortunate to retire ‘sound’ from racing – fit for riding – meaning the world is her oyster.
Renamed for her complete set of striking matching boots, highly athletic with a huge amount of power in her hindquarters. Yet far more suited to living the quiet life.
Quattro’s training with Mel began by helping her build her self-confidence out in the world. Stepping into the float no longer meant she was required to perform upon arrival at an unknown destination.
Implicit trust compounds over time and four years later, a remarkable journey between this ex racehorse and her human is well underway… Wholly unbridled.
No metal bit in Quattro’s mouth, no bridle and no reins. How is this possible? Heart-led riding makes for a truly connected pair.

Scout
Gypsy Cob X
New Forest pony
Born 2014 | Rehomed in SA 2024 | 14.0hh | 510 kg
Pinto gelding
Scout arrived at our sanctuary in the most unplanned of ways! His previous owners remembered seeing a lady walking horses with people at the forest the year before, and when they found themselves moving interstate, sought Mel out specifically because of the natural fit they could see for him.
It seems Scout was destined to become a wellness walking companion, for he’s not a ridden horse. He thrives in the company of humans – just loves to be with us – and always makes a memorable appearance of his own choosing for our Just Be experiences.
After Mel agreed to rehome him she made an incredible discovery – when he was just two years old he’d been a cherished visitor for residents in nursing homes and private properties in VIC with one of his original owners.
He is currently in our training program, The Sublime Way, learning at his own pace from his more experienced friends, with Mel’s steadfast presence beside him.
We are Scout’s fourth, and forever, home.
Bliss
AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY
Born 2023 | Adopted from NSW 2025 | 12.2 hh | 300 kg
Flaxen chestnut filly
Bliss is the second member of our Brumby Trio, popping up for adoption through the same not-for-profit, Save The Brumbies, on Koszi’s birthday in 2025.
Given Mel’s original tagline for the business was BLISSFUL TRAIL WALKS LEADING HORSES she felt fate had stepped in here. A group of guests responded to her personal invitation to be part of Bliss’ journey ‘from wild to walking partner’ and with their direct participation, her adoption and 4-day transport was secured.
This is something to be extremely proud of. Between our Sublime community members, Save The Brumbies and Mel, we’ve managed to save one more beautiful Brumby from government aerial culling programs authorised for ‘feral pests’.
Within a matter of weeks of arriving, Bliss found her confidence around humans and is now the first horse to come up and say hello during Just Be. Not long after her third birthday she had the equivalent of her first day at school, commencing her float training in partnership with a few of our regular guests, with Mel’s gentle mentorship.
In time, and at her pace, Bliss will have her first outing to the forest with Mel by her side for support. Managed well, this is where her socialisation and self-confidence will really take off on an upward spiral.
Jemima (Jem)
AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY
Born 2025 | Adopted from NSW 2026 | 11.2 hh | 190 kg
Strawberry roan filly
Jemima is Mel’s ‘baby Brumby’, the newest member of our team, rounding out the Brumby Trio!
A third Brumby saved by Walk Sublime forever, Jem also came to us from Save The Brumbies’ New England Brumby Sanctuary in Armidale, NSW.
And what a gem she is proving to be. Naturally confident and certainly not backwards in coming forwards, Jemima appears to have found her calling.
Joining us at the end of winter, wrapped from head to hoof in a thick woolly foal coat, it was unclear to Mel exactly what her colour was. More often than not, depending on the light, this chestnut foal seemed to be… pink?
As the warmer weather arrived and those long, fluffy hairs began to shed, the even blend of white hairs through her chestnut base coat explained the pinkish appearance. For Jemima’s colour is known as (somewhat magically, don’t you think?) ‘strawberry roan’.
Mel is gradually introducing Jem to all her family members one by one, giving her the freedom to approach our Just Be visitors on her terms.
For her first twelve months with us, our beautiful pink pony will be given the time and space to settle into her new home, without expectation or agenda. It’s the Sublime way.
